the NFL Playoffs: An Outsiders View

Are you excited?...

I said, are you excited!?!?
Cause, Drew Brees is excited.
So you’d better watch your mouth.

Ah-yes, it’s that time of year again.
a time when the Buffalo Bills are already home watching TV.
Time for the best teams in football to put up or shut up
and let’s be honest, after what was a pretty bogus Wildcard weekend
consisting of only one truly memorable game
(the Packers losing an instant classic to the Arizona Apostles Cardinals),
we can hopefully look forward to some better match-ups
here in the divisional round. ..

see, that’s how professional sports work.
you get all the good teams & you put them into a tournament
and then, check this out, they PLAY EACH OTHER to see who the best team really is!
what a novel concept!

Sorry Timmy…

I have an strange view of the NFL Playoff however and I blame it all on the consistently inept Buffalo Bills franchise. Since the Bills haven’t made the playoffs in more than a decade, the NFL Playoffs forces me to pick a team I don’t care about as much and pull for them in the postseason. This year, it was the Green Bay Packers…
unfortunately, Jesus loves Kurt Warner (and vice-versa) so that ended pretty badly for me & all the cheeseheads.

Sorry A-Rodg… nice mustache, by the way.

but enough jibber-jabber, on to the divisional round!

Arizona Cardinals @ New Orleans Saints
(Sat. 4:30pm ET - FOX)

- Drew Brees is playing the best football of his career with the most consistant offensive compliments he’s had to date in New Orleans and I want to believe that the Saints have enough to bring a championship to a fan-base that lives and dies for their team, but it can not be said enough how well the Cardinals offense performed at home last weekend. Kurt Warner looks like a man who not only understands his teams strengths, but is totally confident in his own ability to get his team in position to makes plays, all while protecting the ball and making smart decisions.  Plus he also happens to have a guy on his team named Larry Fitzgerald…

does anyone else feel the way I do when I watch Fitzgerald play?
like it’s not fair to the defenders because he’s just too good?
Kurt Warner will exploit the Saints shaky secondary,
with Fitzgerald as the main benefactor.

that doesn’t mean we’re cool though , Kurt…
you may think I forgot about what you did.
but I remember all to well.

Yeah, it’s all coming back now, huh?
this game is absolutely terrible, Kurt.
I wasted a whole weekend on it when I was a kid & I feel like you should compensate me my $2.00 dollars back which, after inflation, is probably somewhere about $4.35 by now. I expect payment before the NFC Championship.
personal checks are accepted.
MY PICK: Cardinals 41, Saints 33

Baltimore Ravens @ Indianapolis Colts
(Sat. 8:15pm ET - CBS)

- The Uni-brow comes to town as Lucas Oil Stadium will welcome the Ravens after a rather surprising (and satisfying) beat down of the New England Patriots last Sunday. Tom Brady looked anything but terrific against a Ravens defense which held the Pats to 196 yards of total offense for the game. This doesn't hide the fact that Joe Flacco only completed four passes on the day and there is no way that the Ravens can win with that type of production again. How Peyton Manning continues to not only win, but coax solid numbers out of a rag-tag group of receivers that no one had ever heard of before the season, is a true testament to how far and above he is over anybody else playing the game today. Colts get it done on the strength of Peyton’s arm & his head.

I love this Ravens team, but they are over-matched & out-gunned.
Even if I still have no idea who Pierre Gagnon is or what his father does.
MY PICK: Colts 31,  Ravens 17

Dallas Cowboys @ Minnesota Vikings
(Sun. 1:00pm ET - FOX)

I just have a feeling that he would totally do that in really life.
He may not have much time for laughing come Sunday though…

time for a pop quiz.

fill in the blanks:
1. Vikings/Cowboys
2. Brad Childress/Wade Philips
3. Brett Favre/Tony Romo
4. Minnesota/Dallas

This game is completely in the hands of the (1)_______ offensive play-calling. (2)_______ will have to establish the run early and often to keep the secondary honest. For everything that (3)_______ brings to the table with his gunslingers arm and natural ability, he can be taken advantage of with a combination of pressure up front and tough coverage down the field. (4)_________ needs to win the turnover battle and force offensive breakdowns to put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter.

when the test is completed, please pass your papers forward.
you are not to leave until the full testing period has elapsed.
you have 2 hours, starting now.
make sure you double-check your answers.

This has the makings of a low-scoring, smash-mouth affair.
I need to see Romo win a close one when it really matters before I can give him the nod.
Not this year, not against Favre.
MY PICK: Vikings 20, Cowboys 17

New York Jets @ San Diego Chargers
(Sun. 4:40pm ET - CBS)

- I've gotta say, I was sleeping on the New York Jet-ropolitans for most of the season, but after watching that defense make Carson Palmer look like Carson Daly on the road in Cincinnati last week, I’m starting to buy-in to what Rex Ryan is selling. Ryan has the team believing in itself, in it’s defense and in it’s 2-headed rushing attack of Thomas Jones & Shonn Greene… but do they believe in Mark Sanchez? I just don’t know. I honestly can’t see Sanchez putting up enough yards or points to out-score the Super-Chargers...

or to effectively combat LT’s sweet dance moves…

all kidding aside (for now) , San Diego is a machine.
Philip Rivers and the Charger O-Line will makes the necessary adjustments to escape the persistent Jets blitzing schemes that the Bengals had so much trouble with last week and he will make them play with big yards down the middle of the field from Sproles and Gates.
the Chargers are on a mission & anything less than the Super Bowl is failure.
Now, HIT THAT HOLE!
MY PICK: Chargers 27, Jets 20

should be a good weekend of games…
but I said that last week too.
so best scenario, 50-50 shot it won’t suck.

til’ next time, kiddies.
